The story

The Garibaldi is named for Giuseppe Garibaldi, the general whose campaigns unified Italy in the nineteenth century, and the drink performs the unification in miniature: Campari from the industrial north meets orange juice from the citrus groves of the south. For decades it was a humble bar-standard, two ingredients and no glory, until Naren Young at Dante in New York revived it in the 2010s with "fluffy" juice, freshly aerated to a foam, helping propel the bar to World's Best Bar honors in 2019. It endures because it is aperitivo logic at its most democratic: bitter, bright, and impossible to make pretentious for long.
