The story

The Hurricane was born at Pat O'Brien's in New Orleans in the 1940s, when wartime shortages made whiskey scarce and distributors obliged bars to buy cases of plentiful rum to get it. O'Brien moved the surplus by mixing rum with passion fruit and lemon and serving it in glasses shaped like hurricane lamps, which gave the drink its name. It became the signature souvenir of Bourbon Street, dispensed by the tankful to conventioneers and brides-to-be. It endures because it is New Orleans in a glass: born of scarcity, dressed for excess, and stronger than it tastes, which the city considers a feature.
