The story
Before the cocktail was a category, it was a formula: spirits, sugar, water, bitters — defined in print as early as 1806. By the 1880s, bartenders were gilding the recipe with liqueurs and fruit, and traditionalists pushed back by ordering their whiskey cocktail made the old-fashioned way. The protest became the name. Louisville's Pendennis Club has long claimed the invention, though the drink almost certainly predates the claim. It has since survived Prohibition, the vodka decades, and a maraschino-cherry dark age, mostly by refusing to change. The Old Fashioned endures because it was never a flourish on whiskey — it was an argument that whiskey, properly framed, needed no flourish at all.
