The story
Follow the River Spey through the Scottish Highlands and you find the densest concentration of distilleries in the whisky world — roughly half of Scotland's total, crowded into one green valley. The Glenlivet took out the region's first license in 1824, after decades of enthusiastic illicit distilling in the surrounding glens, and the neighbors eventually followed suit. Speyside built its reputation on elegance rather than aggression: orchard fruit, honey, and the rich influence of sherry casks, a legacy of the trade that once shipped fortified wine into Britain and sent the empty butts north to be refilled. Glenfiddich and Macallan carried the style around the globe. This is whisky for persuading people, not testing them.
